US promise to accelerate gun supply to Taiwan after war in Ukraine

Declarations arise in the midst of uncertainty about the commitment of US President Donald Trump in Taiwan’s defense, especially after his recent decision to suspend all Washington’s military aid to Kiev

The United States will try to accelerate the supply of weapons to Taiwan after the end of the Ukraine war, Washington’s de facto ambassador said Raymond Greene, in an interview published by the Taiwanese Liberty Times.

“For us, Taiwan is definitely a priority. We are making efforts to accelerate delivery deadlines [de armas]Especially for asymmetrical war -related systems, which are particularly important to Taiwan, ”said Greene, director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).

In recent years, Taipé has insisted on the acquisition and development of asymmetrical war systems, such as anti -aircraft and anti -viral missiles, submarines and unmanned air vehicles (‘drones’) to combat the growing military threats of China, which considers the autonomous island of its province.

“When the war in Ukraine ends, we hope to focus our attention again on Taiwan’s defensive needs,” added the diplomat, who also reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to the island.

These statements arise in the midst of uncertainty about the commitment of US President Donald Trump in Taiwan’s defense, especially after his recent decision to suspend all Washington’s military aid to Kiev.

In late February, the Republican avoided committing to prevent Taiwan’s Chinese invasion and said he had a “great relationship” with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

For more than seven decades that the United States have been at the center of disputes between the two parts, as Washington is the main arms supplier to Taipei and, although officially not maintaining diplomatic relations with the island, could defend it in case of conflict with Beijing.

This position has caused permanent friction between the US and China, whose government has defined the “Taiwanese question” as the “red line” in relations between the two powers.
