Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte was arrested on Tuesday (11) after the country’s government said that he received an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) for his arrest.

“Early this morning, Interpol Manila received the official copy of the arrest warrant of the International Criminal Court (ICC),” according to a statement from the presidential communications office.

Duterte returned to the capital Filipina Manila on Tuesday after giving a speech in a campaign rally on Sunday (9), to the city’s Philippine community.

“Upon his arrival, the attorney general filed a notification to the ICC for an arrest warrant against the former president for crimes against humanity,” the statement said, and added that the former president is currently under the custody of the authorities.

A CNN contacted Interpol and TPI to comment.

During the Hong Kong event, Duterte attacked TPI investigation amid speculation that the global body would issue an arrest warrant for its role in its controversial drug war operations.
