Syria is currently undergoing a new phase of violence, marked by clashes between groups that support the government of Bashar al-Assad and the interim government

The Brazilian government guided Brazilians to leave it in the midst of new conflicts and allegations of ethnic murders. In a note, the He expressed a strong concern for violent incidents that occurred between March 6 and 9 in the provinces of Lataquia and Tartus, Syria, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1000 people, mostly civilians. “Brazil transmits condolences to the victims’ relatives and urges the parties involved in the exercise of containment. It also reiterates its position in favor of peaceful and inclusive political transition, with respect to independence, unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria, ”says the statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which informs that there is no record of Brazilians among the victims.

Itamaraty recommends to Brazilians that they do not travel to Syria and, if they are in the country, adopt the safety indications of local authorities. Syria is currently undergoing a new phase of violence, marked by clashes between groups that support the government of Bashar al-Assad and the interim government. These conflicts resulted in civilian massacres, with a particular focus on the Alauite community. The massacres have been more frequent in the provinces of Latakia, Tartous and Homs, where the death toll already exceeds a thousand, most of them civilians belonging to the Alauite minority.

Although government security forces have been able to resume control in some areas, the possibility that groups not aligned with the government unite and represent a new threat to central power is still a concern. In Damascus, the atmosphere is tense, but so far there are no records of protests or acts of violence. Embassies, including Brazil, do not plan to evacuate their employees unless the situation becomes even more critical. In addition, the presence of foreign forces in the region adds a layer of complexity to the already delicate Syrian scenario.
