With an investment of 7.3 billion pounds, a new project will have a capacity of 100,000 people
Manchester United this Thursday (11.mar.2025) plans for building a new stadium with a capacity of 100,000 people, replacing Old Trafford. The project will be conducted by the Fosters + Partners Architecture Office, based in London. The new stadium is part of a broader regeneration project in the Trafford Wharfside area.
According to the club, the initiative should inject 7.3 billion pounds into the local economy, scheduled to create 92,000 jobs and more than 17,000 new homes. The project also estimates an increase of 1.8 million in the number of annual visitors.
The decision to build a new stadium, instead of renovating Old Trafford, was based on one. The document evaluated the impacts of both options and concluded that the new construction would bring additional benefits to the club and the community. While the capacity of the Reformed Old Trafford would reach 87,000 viewers, the new stadium could accommodate up to 100,000 people.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the club’s co -owner, said the project seeks to preserve the essence of Old Trafford, while introducing a modern structure. He highlighted the importance of the new stadium for the social and economic development of the Old Trafford region, aligning infrastructure investment initiatives in northern England.
“Manchester United should always strive to do the best in everything they do, on and off the field, and that includes the stadium we play. Old Trafford holds many special memories for me personally, but we need to be brave and take this opportunity to build a new home, suitable for the future, where a new story can be done, ” Sir Alex Ferguson said.
Project financing, estimated at over 2 billion pounds, has not yet been defined. The sale of the new stadium appointment rights is considered a possible source of revenue.
Estimated time for construction
Architect Norman Foster will be responsible for the project of the new Manchester United stadium, replacing Old Trafford. Developed by the Foster + Partners Architecture Office, the project aims to join the stadium with a new sports neighborhood in the city of Manchester.
Lord Norman Foster is a world -renowned English architect and designer who founded the Foster + Partners architecture office.
Foster detailed structural aspects of the project, noting that the stadium will be designed to bring the fans closer to the field and optimize acoustics to enhance the sound of the fans. The design will feature an open structure, protected by a roof that can capture solar energy and store rainwater.
Construction is expected to be completed in 5 years, a reduced deadline compared to the usual time of a decade for projects of this size. Foster explained that the strategy for accelerating the work involves component prefabrication, which will be transported by Manchester Ship Canal and mounted on site.
The project includes the reconstruction of the Old Trafford station, making it a point of access to the stadium and facilitating public transport displacement. In addition to the stadium, the proposal provides for the creation of an urban area of mixed use, with planned streets for standing access.
The initiative involves multiple sectors, including civic leaders, owners, engineers, consultants, architects and fans. Project financing and exact deadlines for the beginning of the works have not yet been released.
