The mayor of Sao Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), confirmed, on Tuesday (11.mar.2025), that he is preparing a bill to restructure the Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM). The proposal is being developed “Four hands”, according to the mayor himself.
“The guard has been doing police functions for some time. Cities need to meet this demand for security, and GCM has been increasingly relevant in this scenario ”Nunes said during an interview with journalists about the Balance of Carnival 2025.
Among the main changes planned are the creation of a training academy for the guards and operational adjustments to ensure greater effectiveness in security actions, the mayor said.
In parallel, a bill that proposes to change the name of GCM to “Metropolitan Police” or “Urban Police”, with the creation of an exclusive coat of arms for the new identity of the corporation, is being processed in the City Council. The vote, which was scheduled for late February, was postponed after the suspension of an extraordinary session.
