US President Donald Trump doubled duties to Canadian steel and aluminum to 50 % and threatened further measures if Canada does not abolish duties to US products.

US President Donald Trump has tightened his attitude towards Canada and announced that he increases duties on the import of steel and aluminum from the neighboring country, compared to the originally set value, twice as much. Reuters informed about it.

From 25 to 50 %

From March 12, when duties on the import of steel and aluminum into the US enter into force, they will be set at 50 %for Canada. For other states, they remain 25 %at the originally set level. Thus, Trump responded to the Canadian province of Ontario to impose a 25 % duty on the export of electricity to the US.

Trump on his social network Truth Social said he ordered the trade minister to grow from 25 % to 50 % in the case of Canadian steel and aluminum. “In addition, Canada must immediately cancel duties of 250 % to 390 % on various US dairy products that have been considered outrageous for a long time,” Trump said. He also threatened a “significant increase in” import duties for cars from April 2, unless Canada cancels other “blatantly long -term duties”.

As far as electricity supplies are concerned, he informed that he would soon announce an emergency in the affected areas. Ontário supplies electricity to Minnesota, New York and Michigan. The price increase is affected by approximately 1.5 million Americans. At the same time, the Prime Minister of the Province Doug Ford warned that if the US is escalating, it will not hesitate and disable electricity supply completely.
