When to cut sage
Although sage trimming is very simple, it is important to choose the right time. The most important rule is that you should never cut it in autumn. In this period, the plant is more susceptible to rot that can penetrate fresh wounds. In addition, you will be at risk that it will not be able to cross the winter, although most of the species are fully grown in our country. Before winter frosts, it is better to leave the plant at rest and not interfere with its growth so that it can safely hibernate.
The best time to trim sage is therefore early in the spring, specifically between March and April. At this time the plant begins to come to life and expels new shoots. If you cut it in time, you will support its healthy growth and richer flowering. It is important that the cut is made before the sage begins to grow intensively, because the later cut could unnecessarily weaken the plant. When cutting, it is best to remove old, dry and damaged branches to have new twigs enough space and energy.
How to trim the sage properly
You do not have to worry about experimenting at all when cutting sage. This herb is quite durable and can withstand coarser interventions. First, focus on removing dry, damaged or sick leaves and stems. For mature shrubs, it is recommended to shorten the branches to approximately 20 centimeters, but you can adjust the cut height to the specific species that you grow in your garden. For smaller plants, it is sufficient to cut them to a height of about 5 centimeters. This cut will support the healthy growth of new shoots and allow the plant to branch again with the advent of warm days.
In addition to a decorative character, sage is also suitable for the kitchen and home pharmacy.
