CDS-PP President Nuno Melo considered this Tuesday that “a good government fell” and held the opposition responsible for taking the country to a political crisis that the government tried to avoid “Until the last second”.
“Today a good government has fallen, and the CDS will do everything so that, this good government can continue the work they had been doing, improving the lives of the Portuguese every day. The Portuguese have knowledge of everything this good government has done for a year, just like the Portuguese have memory of all that was done in other governments, by Pedro Nuno Santos and the PS,” he said.
Nuno Melo spoke to journalists at the party’s national headquarters, where tonight gathered the party’s executive committee.

Nuno Melo said that “The left and populism that says the right -hand man opted today for bringing to Portugal a political crisis” and wanted “Perpetuate a climate of suspicion, made of permanent attacks, not to have to politically discuss what the merits of governance are.”
The CDS-PP leader maintained that there was a desire to try to find, with the opposition, “A way that allows the political crisis to be avoided“. Nuno Melo said he didn’t participate “In negotiations”but there was, “Throughout this time, contacts between responsible from various parties.”
“The government and the parties that support the government really tried to find until the latter according to a solution that would allow the political crisis to avoid. And therefore, if this political crisis happens, it happens because the oppositions never wanted anything other than these same elections, that is, they valued party interest on the country’s interest, with prejudice to the Portuguese,” he criticized.
From the perspective of the CDS-PP leader, “This is an almost mortal sin that must also be measured at the polls, because it was perfectly excused.”
Asked about the Inquiry Committee that the PS proposed and challenge launched by the government during the debate in the Assembly of the Republic for the socialists to accept that he had a shorter deadline, Nuno Melo said that “The deadlines were being extended to the tolerable limit” and argued that “When you try an understanding, it cannot be the position of one of the parts.”
The centrist leader also said that “In a parliamentary commission of inquiry like this, with a reasonably limited object, 30 or 60 days is more than enough to investigate everything you want and what you don’t want.”
“And therefore, when it is not accepted, it is because, in fact, the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry is only the instrument of a larger strategy, which is that of personal attack, such a desire to transform the political scenario into a discussion about cases, when there is no possibility to argue in politics against what the government was achieving, and which is really impressive,” he said.
The CDS-PP leader pointed out that the party “It is loyal in the coalition” e “It is on the side of this Prime Minister, and along with the PSD will work so that the justice is done at the polls and this government can continue the work that has been enormously interrupted.”
In a preview of the hearing with the President of the Republic on Wednesday, Melo indicated that CDS-PP will argue that early elections take place in May, in line with the calendar pointed out by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
