Pope Francis, who is still recovering from bilateral pneumonia, sent a telegram to the city of Bahía Blanca expressing solidarity with the “affected populations” by a storm that left at least 16 dead.
“[Estou] Deeply sad to learn of the natural disaster that hit the region of Bahía Blanca, which caused so many victims and material damage, I offer my fervent prayers for the eternal rest of those who died, ”says the message released on Tuesday (11) by the Holy See Office.
Lionel Messi also joined the support of those affected in the area. “My condolences to families who have lost their loved ones and a lot of strength to all who are going through this difficult time,” he pointed out in a story published in his official Instagram account.
Argentine basketball star Manu Ginobili, who is a native of Bahía Blanca, also posted a video on social networks on the subject.
“Hello, as I’m sure you all saw, the situation in my city, Bahía Blanca, is desperate,” he said in a publication on X.
“There are people who lost absolutely everything they had, there are people who died and there are people whose whereabouts are unknown. Our people’s willingness to help when it is needed is well known. This is one of those moments, ”he added.
Destruction in Argentina
Relief efforts in the region include Caritas Argentina organization, which is asking for help from affected families on their site.
Authorities reported that a total of 1,450 people were taken from the area, housed in 13 service centers.
A spokesman for EDES Energía announced on Tuesday that authorities were able to restore 70% of the electricity supply in the city.
The Argentine government declared three days after the 16 dead in the city of Bahía Blanca, according to the publication of the Official Gazette of Argentina.
