Government’s body says measure shows its commitment for resources to be directed to “where they are most important”
The United States Department of Education on Tuesday (11.mar.2025) that will dismiss almost 50% of its workforce. The agency reported that affected employees will go on administrative license from March 21.
The layoffs, according to the Secretary of Education, Linda McMahon, reflect “The Department of Education’s commitment to efficiency, responsibility and guarantee that resources are directed to where they are most needed: students, parents and teachers”.
The Department of Education has stated that all agency divisions will be affected by the reduction and some “will need to go through a significant reorganization”.
According to the department, the agency had 4,133 employees when US President Donald Trump (Republican Party) took office on January 20. After the cuts announced on Tuesday (11.mar), the workforce will be 2,183 workers.
In August last year, during the campaign, Trump proposed to end the Education Department and transfer educational policies to states.
In early March, US press said the Republican was still willing to dismantle the department. He said he had access to the draft of a decree in which Trump guides the secretary of education to “Take all necessary measures to facilitate the closure of the Department of Education”, Based on“maximum appropriate degree and permitted by law”.
For the Education Department to be closed, a bill must be approved with at least 60 votes in the Senate. Today, the Republicans 53 chairs.
