European country has pledged to donate the value in the next 3 years; Fund is administered by BNDES
The federal government announced on Wednesday (12.mar.2025) that Ireland will donate 15 million euros (about $ 91 million in the current conversion) to the Amazon Fund. The value will be sent in the next 3 years. The announcement was made during a meeting between Minister Marina Silva (Environment and Climate Change), and Seán Canney, Ireland Minister of Transport.
“I am particularly pleased to have made this announcement with Minister Marina Silva, who as an environmental minister and climate change, coordinated efforts that resulted in the fall of more than 45% in deforestation in the Amazon from 2023 to 2024 compared to 2022”said Canney.
The Amazon Fund is administered by BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development of Brazil), under the coordination of the Federal Government through the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. The initiative aims to reduce deforestation emissions and forest degradation.
According to Marina Silva, the Amazon Fund is a reference in facing deforestation and climate change. “It is a non -returned funds fund, with actions in crime fighting agendas and investment in research and innovative development projects. All this makes a difference, because what we want is a new cycle of prosperity, especially in the context of getting worse of climate change ”she declared.
With Ireland’s contribution, the Amazon Fund will have 8 donor countries. “Ireland’s important support represents a recognition of the good results achieved by Brazil in combating deforestation, and will allow the country to advance further in this agenda and confront the climate change.”said the minister.
Aloizio Mercadante, president of BNDES, celebrated the donation. “Ireland’s donation to the Amazon Fund is an international recognition of Brazil’s effectiveness in combating deforestation and promoting sustainable development”he said.
“This important contribution reinforces our ability to finance initiatives that protect the forest, strengthen communities, and drive bioeconomics. BNDES, as a fund manager, will continue to work to expand the positive impacts of this initiative and attract new partners committed to environmental preservation and confront the climate crisis. ”he declared.
