BUENOS AIRES (Reuters)-Argentine police used water cannons and rubber bullets on Wednesday to suppress thousands of protesters who gathered in front of Congress to protest against pension cuts in President Javier Milei’s government.
According to the Ministry of Security, protesters included not only retirees but also Hooligans – violent fans – from Argentine football, who appeared on television throwing stones and objects against police.
Milei, who took office at the end of 2023, implemented significant cuts on public spending to restore fiscal balance, with policies that, according to union and opposition leaders, affected the most vulnerable sectors of society.
“It’s not that there is no money. There is a political decision to abandon our elderly, ”said Martín Lousteau, senator of the radical Civic Union, in his X account.
“We are in favor of cleaning public finances. We are in favor of a more efficient state … What we cannot allow is that these corrections are made at the expense of the anguish, health and abandonment of our retirees, ”added the opposition leader.
The government has not yet disclosed numbers on the total of arrests or injured depending on the incidents in the center of Buenos Aires.
