Former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) complained on Thursday (13) of the speed with which the Federal Supreme Court (STF) is leading the complaint of the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) against him for an alleged attempt of coup.

He compared the speed of the process to the “speed of light”, noting that this only occurs “when the target is in 1st place in all polls for the President of the Republic in the 2026 elections.”

Bolsonaro stated that Brazilian courts have “indexes that impress negatively,” but stressed that a “inquiry full of problems and irregularities” is going to trial “in just 1 year and 1 month.”

The trial, by the president of the first class of the Supreme Court, Minister Cristiano Zanin.

In his X (former Twitter) profile, Bolsonaro also cited the case of former US President Donald Trump, accused of trying to annul the 2020 presidential election and the invasion of the capitol on January 6, 2021. The former Brazilian president said that the “persecution” against Trump took almost five years to convert to formal complaint and that, after the complaint, the lawsuits were “reduced to powder”. by the “sovereign choice” of the American people.

A sentence on the complaint against Bolsonaro is expected to be issued in 2025, aiming to conclude the case before the 2026 elections, preventing the process from interfering in the electoral calendar. If the defendants do not accept the sentence, they may appeal, which could further prolong the progress of the process. However, the final judgment should take place by the end of this year, according to STF forecasts.

Bolsonaro’s allies also echoed the criticism, pointing out that the trial of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) for the alleged Lava Jato schemes took seven years to have an outcome.

On the other hand, the agility of the process, provided that the legal rites are respected, could, if Bolsonaro is acquitted, strengthen his intentions to dispute the Presidency of the Republic in 2026.
