The Vietnamese court condemned eight people for a fatal fire in Hanoi, which in 2023 claimed 56 victims and revealed serious violations of safety regulations.

On Friday, the Vietnamese court sent eight people to prison in connection with a fire that in 2023 engulfed the residential block in Hanoi and deprived 56 people. It was the world’s saddest fire in the last two decades, TASR writes, according to AFP report.

The building had only one east and no emergency ladder. People said they heard shouting when apartment residents tried to escape from the flames through the cold windows.

The apartment owner received 12 years in prison

The owner of the nine -storey apartment building received “the strictest punishment” for the fire in September 2023, stated in the judgment, which convicted him of the violation of fire regulations and imposed a sentence of 12 years in prison.

Seven local officials were convicted between 30 months to seven years. The reason, according to the court, was their irresponsible action, which “caused serious consequences” when they did not properly announce the owner’s mistake.

One of the four sides of the building had no windows at all, and another had only small ventilation holes, “AFP recalls” Several children and people from one family were among the dead and injured, causing tremendous pain, “the judgment said.
