The EU extends the selective sanctions to Russia after accepting the demands of Hungary
The Council of the European Union has prolonged this Friday another six months the selective sanctions against Russian personalities and entities for undermining the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, after accepting Hungary’s demand to remove three names from the blacklist, according to diplomatic sources.
These sources confirm that the Russian-Israelí Mijaíl Fridman, Letterone exactist, which is, in turn, in turn, the largest shareholder of the Supermarket Group Dia.
Budapest had asked its community partners to eliminate several blacklists names to accept the prolongation of sanctions, but in Brussels there were fear that the elimination of certain key people may affect the general effectiveness of these restrictive measures.
Other delegations also asked not to extend the sanctions to several specific people, while others insisted that no name of the list be suppressed.
Finally, the extension of the sanctions was possible after reaching a unanimously balanced agreement, the sources indicate.
Last September the last extension of these sanctions was approved, which expired at the end of the day of this Saturday, March 15, if the twenty -seven do not reach a unanimity agreement. Community ambassadors will meet again on Friday to try to reach an agreement.
Current restrictive measures provide travel restrictions for natural persons, assets immobilization and the prohibition of putting funds or other economic resources available to people and entities included in the list. The measures affect more than 2,200 people and entities, many of them in response to the current military aggression of Russia against Ukraine.
Apart from these restrictive measures, the EU has already approved 16 packages of sanctions (sectoral and selective) against Russia since the initiation of the large scale of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.
Union leaders plan to address the situation in Ukraine with its president, Volodimir Zelenski, at its spring summit next Thursday in Brussels. (EFE)
