Thousands of demonstrators met on Saturday in the Serbian capital Belgrade to participate in the afternoon at a large anti -government meeting organized by students who have been protesting against corruption and the government of President Aleksandar Vučič since the November of Novi Sada in Novi Sad. According to AP and Hina reports, TASR reports this.

Crowds of students and other dissatisfied citizens have been coming to the Serbian capital for several days and from different parts of the country, many part have passed on bikes or even on foot, Hina explains.

Saturday’s protest is to culminate in several months of demonstrations against corruption in the government of Vučič. He has repeatedly warned that at this assembly they were planning violence and threatened to arrest in case of any incidents. A number of members of the Code of Order Police were deployed to the center of Belgrade on Saturday.

The city canceled public transport

AP writes that in an apparent effort to prevent people from participating in the demonstration, they canceled public transport in Belgrade on Saturday. The transport company appealed to “security reasons” and announced that public transport will not operate from 11:00 am. On the roads leading to Belgrade, car columns were formed. There were also several “work on the road” at the last minute, reports Hina.

In the suburbs of Belgrade there was also a violent incident, a certain driver hit the car and injured three people. The police detained him, although he had active resistance. The injured were taken to the emergency room where they were treated. According to the Serbian media, the driver hit a group of people heading in the city center.

His supporters meet in front of the President’s office. Some were camping all night on the spot. They also park there with dozens of tractors, calling them a second group of students – on the contrary, supporting Vučič. On social networks, however, videos have been spreading for several days and photos suggesting that it’s not just students. It raises concerns in public that the group may be provocators to encourage violent incidents, writes Hina.

Meanwhile, the Serbs living abroad were also hawking the support of Saturday’s anti -government gathering; Protest gatherings are organized in at least 30 cities around the world, such as Scandinavia, Ireland, United States, Thailand, Cyprus, Australia, as well as in the Middle East.

Anti -government protests in Serbia caused a collapse of a concrete shelter above the entrance to the railway station in Novi Sad, where 15 people were killed. Much of the Serbs are convinced that the tragedy has contributed to the corruption of government officials, their laxity and insufficient supervision on the construction. The superstructure collapsed only a few months after the reconstruction of the building.

Under the pressure of the protests, several high -ranking representatives, including Prime Minister Miloš Vučevič and Mayor of Novi Sad Milan Djurič, resigned. Goran Vesič and Tomislav Momirovič also resigned. However, these gestures did not calm the public.

The Vučič itself calls for dialogue, but at the same time he claims that extensive anti -government protests are financed by the West and their aim is to “unleash” the color revolution and lay the government with “different hybrid tactics.
