‘Let’s give a message to Brazil and the world,’ said the former president through social networks
Faced with a possible trial for a coup attempt, the former president called on his followers to a demonstration on Sunday (16) in Rio de Janeiro to show that he is the opposition leader before the 2026 elections. “Let’s give a message to Brazil and the world,” said the far right politician, who chaired the country between 2019-2022, in a video published on social networks. Bolsonaro hopes to see “one million” of protesters on Copacabana beach.

The event’s motto, scheduled to start at 10 am, is to ask for a “amnesty” for people convicted of involvement in the 2023 disorders in Brasilia. On the date, thousands of Bolsonarists invaded and vandalized the Planalto Palace, the Congress and headquarters of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), a week after the inauguration of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. While Bolsonaro was in the United States, his supporters required military intervention to overthrow Lula, who defeated the former president in the 2022 elections.
The attacks on January 8 are one of the reasons that led the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) to accuse the former president in February for an alleged coup plan to try to remain in power. He is accused of being the leader of a “criminal organization” who has conspired for months for this purpose and may face a accumulated penalty of over 40 years in prison.
