Experts warn against miraculous cleaning sponges: are dangerous to our health

Each of us likes to simplify household cleaning. If advertising offers a helper that should do most of the work for us, few people can withstand such an attraction. But the tax in a few extra minutes can be too big.

Have you also heard of magic sponges, with which cleaning is just fun for a few minutes? Certainly yes. These are so -called melamine sponges, which have become a popular and actually very effective helper in cleaning not only abroad, but IU in the Czech Republic. Their special surface is really perfect for easy removal of dirt of various origin. But there is one big problem here, which is now alerted by ecologists and other scientists.

What does it work well, but do you really want such a sponge? Watch youtub video from the workshop we live with minimalism:

Treacherous basotect

The trade name of the material from which these sponges are made is basotect. This is, as mentioned, a melamine foam, which is known, for example, by musicians. Why they? Basotect is greatly dampened by sound and is therefore used to produce acoustic panels, but thanks to its thermal insulation properties we also meet it where it is necessary to insulate some space. But they wouldn’t be even enterprising people if they did not come up with further possible use – to clean anything from anywhere.

Just for some use

While on the wall where we attach such panels, there is only minimal abrasion of the material, using melamine foam for cleaning, each time it moves from the micrhranges of plastic. In addition, they contain a significant amount of poisonous substances that are used in the production of this material. Does the right moment come to the question of where the microplastics are lost? It does not lose, but together with the water in which we dip the sponge, pour them into the waste, from where they travel through the sewer into the sewage plant. It is won, we could say – but it is not.

Don’t play with microplastics

The microplastics are really so tiny that even a high quality water purifier can not cope with them and this material then goes further to the stream, the river, to the sea, to the ocean. If he evaporates, he can come back to us in the form of rain, but even if he stays in a liquid state, we will probably meet her in the finals on her own plate. In this way, microplastics get into food – whether animal or plant origin. So we, our body, are the end recipient of such waste.

Cancer and threat to nature

Basotect is no innocent. In addition to the aforementioned microplastics that can release and flood nature and ourselves, it is also the content of melamine and formaldehyde, ie toxic chemicals, which can be released at high temperatures into the air and in some cases even cause cancer. Moreover, it is not a degradable material, so nature has no chance of getting rid of its remnants naturally.

Prohibit? Rather as soon as possible

Not surprisingly, scientists call for the fastest and especially global ban on the use of these “magic sponges”, which in the first phase of their long and secret life cycle really help, but their next journey through our bowels is more than poor. And how do you see it? Do you have a piece of such a sponge for lunch today?
