Paris (Reuters)-The position of peace troops in Ukraine, as proposed by the United Kingdom and France as part of a ceasefire agreement with Russia, is a matter to be decided by Kiev, not Moscow, French President Emmanuel Macron said in an interview.
Macron and United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Strmer have been hurrying to consolidate military support to Ukraine, while US President Donald Trump pressures for a peace agreement with Russia. Starmer organized a virtual meeting on Saturday with Macron and other non -American allies in Ukraine.
“Ukraine is sovereign. If she asks allied forces to be in her territory, it’s not something Russia accepts or not, ”Macron said in a joint interview with several French regional newspapers, published Saturday night.
Russia has rejected the idea of soldiers from countries belonging to the NATO alliance being allocated in Ukraine.
Macron said any peace maintenance force would consist of “a few thousand soldiers per country” to be mobilized in key places, adding that several European and non-European countries were interested in participating.
