On Monday, the European Union promised Syria aid of approximately EUR 2.5 billion in an effort to help restore the country after overthrown the long -time President Bashar Assad. According to the AFP report, TASR reports this.

“Syrians need more support whether they are still abroad or decide to return home. That is why the European Union today is increasing its promise for Syrians in the country and in the region to nearly € 2.5 billion for 2025 and 2026, “said the President of the European Commission Ursula von Der Leyen.

“We will continue to address humanitarian needs in Syria, as well as in host communities across Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Turkey,” Leyen wrote in a post on the X network, adding that the EU will support Syria’s renewal.

The EU will guests the ninth conference on Syria on Monday in Brussels, the main goal of which is to mobilize support for local residents and refugees abroad. This is also the first conference after Assad’s overthrow in December. According to Reuters, the temporary Syrian government also participates in the conference.

Germany promised Syria another € 300 million

Germany promised Syria another € 300 million to support Syrians before the conference. On the eve of the conference, Turkey called on the EU to unconditionally abolish sanctions against Syria.

The euroblock has recently mitigated sanctions on the key sector of the country’s economy, but, along with other powers, insists that the Syrian authorities have to fulfill the promises of inclusive transformation. Damascus has taken positive steps, including the signing of the Constitutional Declaration, which determines the five -year transitional period and the rights of women and freedom of expression.

Nevertheless, there have recently been on the coast of Syria to fight between security forces and armrests supporting Assad, which claimed nearly 1,500 dead. It was mostly civilians from the ranks of the Alavite minority, which also includes Assad.

Since 2011, a civil war has been raging in Syria. The needs of the country are therefore huge – large areas are ruined and the economy has been devastated by years of international isolation.

The United Nations (UN) claims that at the current rate of growth, Syria would need more than 50 years to return to the economic level before the outbreak of the war. The country is still suffering from a serious humanitarian situation and about 16.7 million people need help.
