The meeting takes place at a time when Washington pressures Moscow to accept a truce with Ukraine. The US proposed a 30-day ceasefire, already accepted by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, but not yet by Russia.
Putin, who met Witkoff in recent days, has imposed conditions that go beyond what was requested in the initial agreement.

In a conversation with European leaders, the Ukrainian leader said Russia wants to have “a stronger position in the territory before ceasefire” and accused Moscow of postponing the conversations.
On Sunday, Zelenski ordered the change of the commander of the state-of-the-section at a time when Kiev’s troops face difficulties against Russian soldiers. Anatolii Bargilevich was replaced by Andrii Henatov, who has the mission of increasing management efficiency.
