The German Central Bank (Bundesbank) says on Monday that it is harder to get cash in the country because many banks have closed agencies and reduced the number of ATM boxes.
Bundesbank economists have ensured that numerical offer is ensured in the country, but add that there is a descending trend in availability.
“Most of the population have access to an ATM or a bank counter within five kilometers,” reads Bundesbank: “In total, 90.3% of the rural population has access to an ATM or a bank counter within five kilometers. In urban areas, on the contrary, the percentage is 98.1%. ”
The decrease in the number of bank branches and automatic boxes, as well as the increase in the number of citizens who claim to have to strive more to get cash, underline the perspective that “The good availability of money in Germany is not evident in the future”according to Bundesbank.
The number of bank branches in Germany decreased to less than half, from 53,000 in 2002 to 21,000 by 2023. The number of ATM boxes increased by 2018 to 59,000, but has since decreased and situated by 51,000 by 2023, according to Bundesbank data. ATMs from the country’s supermarkets can also provide money when shopping.
In 2022, the problem of German multibans was different: thefts. Germany registered more than one at attack on ATMs per day, with a total of 496 attacks or attempts to attack with explosives.
A total of 413 successful detonations resulted in theft of 30 million euros-in addition to material damage worth 13 million euros.
