Amir Somoggi, a partner at Sports Value, comments that the research result represents a change in the fans’ priorities. “There was a maturation of the audience, which once only worried about titles,” he says. He explains that today, fans understand that “the conquest of titles comes with good administration.”
The expert cites Flamengo and Palmeiras as examples in financial management. Athletico-PR is, according to him, “the precursor of good administration, budget control and debt reduction”. More recently, Fortaleza, Goiás, Cuiabá and Red Bull Bragantino have been doing an “amazing job”, says Somoggi.
Cuiabá, Goiás and Athletico-PR were the only club A clubs that ended 2023 zero in the ratio between net debt and revenues, according to a study by Sports Value released in May last year.
The TM20 survey with Brazil Panels also showed that Vasco’s fans were the one that most cited mismanagement as the club’s main problem. The Rio club and, with an estimated debt of R $ 1.4 billion, even after its control bought by 777 partners for R $ 700 million. The research also shows that, for the fan, club management does not only involve money. Debts were the least remembered problem, cited by 12% of participants – among them, most (25%) are Corinthian.
Somoggi cites Barcelona’s strong marketing strategy as an example of management besides the financial balances: “It’s a team from Catalonia, a region that has about 7.5 million inhabitants, but got 300 million fans worldwide.” Transparency, how decisions are made and viability of projects are also points of evaluation of a sports administration, recalls the partner of Sports Value.
