A (Environmental Commission) approved in this 3rd (18.mar.2025) the project that creates the Reciprocity Law. The text is a direct response to the latest measures of US President Donald Trump, who has extended to 25% of Brazil’s steel and aluminum import rate. The PL (Bill) 2,088 of 2023 will be based on this 4th (19.mar) in (Commission on Economic Affairs), in a terminative decision. If approved, it goes straight to the House. Senator (We can-PA), the project creates conditions for Brazil to demand from its business partners the same environmental measures charged as a condition for the importation of Brazilian products.
To the Poder360Marinho said the project was created to “Combat the hypocrisy of some business partners”,
“This project was designed there in 2023, as a way to combat the hypocrisy of some business partners who charged environmental measures to Brazil, but did not follow the same rules. Now, in this current context of protectionist measures, imported product taxation, the project gains another dimension by ensuring conditions for Brazil to activate a retaliation device in case of tariff barriers.”said the congressman.
The senator (PP-MS), the text rapporteur, expanded the project’s scope to include the united States’s surcharge to Brazilian exports.
“This project can not only be in the environment. We have expanded it, because we have been living in the world, where countries are looking more in, closing more today.explained Tereza Cristina, in a statement in the CMA.
The congressman seeks to approve the project in the National Congress before April 2, when the United States will implement “reciprocal tariffs” on international trade, especially impacting the ethanol sector in Brazil.
The approved project establishes a mechanism that allows the CAMEX (Foreign Chamber of Trade) Strategic Council to adopt contracted, including restrictions on imports of goods and services or the suspension of commercial concessions, investments and obligations related to intellectual property rights and other commitments in commercial agreements in the country.
