Arnold Schönberg did not lack self -confidence. When the avant -garde composer found more and more joy to act as a painter with the mid -30 more and more and more joy, he asked his publisher to increase clients for portrait sessions – and immediately gave him a sales argument. He, Schönberg, is only amateur on the canvas. But it is much more interesting to “be painted by a musician of my call than from some artisan, whose name no longer knows any person in 20 years, while mine already belongs to music history today”.
