The German Constitutional Court rejected the opposition’s objections to the government plan to enforce an expenditure package of EUR 500 billion for defense and infrastructure.

On Monday evening, the German Constitutional Court rejected the opposition parties against the plan of the future government coalition, which plans to enforce an extensive package of defense and infrastructure expenditure in the outgoing composition of Parliament. According to Reuters, TASR reports this.

The expenditure plan was prepared by the Christian Democratic CDU/CSU block, which won the February parliamentary elections, along with the Social Democrats (SPD). They will probably be part of the future government coalition.

The plan includes the creation of a special infrastructure renovation fund in the amount of EUR 500 billion, as well as the release of strict rules of indebtedness of the country enshrined in the Constitution in order to enable the increase in military expenditure.

The change of debt rules would therefore require a change in the constitution for which a two -thirds majority in the Federal Assembly (Bundestag) is required. However, the losses of SPD in the February elections, however, caused the CDU/CSU and SPD block in the new composition of Parliament did not have the necessary constitutional majority. Therefore, they want to enforce the changes in the old composition of Bundestag.

However, opposition MPs from the far -right alternative to Germany (AfD), the Liberal Free Democrats (FDP), as well as the left and the Sahra Wagenknecht, at the last minute, attacked the arrangement of an extraordinary meeting of the departing Bundestag at the Constitutional Court. They argued that this step would violate the rights of the incoming members of the parliament. However, the court rejected their objections and therefore the outgoing composition of Bundestag will meet Tuesday.
