The United States Department of Defense reported that several Russian satellites recently participated in maneuvers described as tactical practices of “attack and defense” in space, according to a statement issued by CNN.
These actions, observed last week by US military officials, involved coordinated movements of Russian spacecraft in the low terrestrial orbit, approximately 500 miles on the planet, as reported by the media .
A Pentagon spokesman said that satellites seemed to be training for scenarios that could improve their efficacy in a possible conflict, including the ability to surround and isolate another satellite.
“Several Russian satellites worked together to surround and isolate another satellite, demonstrating their ability to attack hostile spacecraft in the future confrontation,” explained an American defense official to CNN. Although the target satellite was not identified as American, the implications of such tactics have not gone unnoticed by military strategists.
These maneuvers have revived concerns about the militarization of space, and US officials closely follow the situation as part of the ongoing efforts to safeguard US orbital assets.
