Government will remain in office over the next 30 days

The Serbian Parliament announced on Wednesday the fall of the government, following the resignation of the Prime Minister, Milos Vucevic, after months of protests for the death of 15 people in the collapse of a train station in November.

A total of 146 of the 250 Serbian deputies present voted in favor of the resignation of the party chief in power (Serbian Progressive Party, NHS), while the opposition boycotted the session.

The government will remain in office over the next 30 days, when a new executive should be presented. Otherwise, legislative elections will be called.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic rejected the proposal to oppose a transitional government with independent experts and implied that an early elections could be made in June, if a new government is not elected to date, the Daily Serbian Danana, quoted by the Europa Press news agency.

The coalition government, controlled by Vucic, has a wide parliamentary majority, so it should not have difficulty presenting a new government team if the president so wishes.

Parliament President Ana BRnabic read Vucevic’s resignation and thanked the “honest and honest” performance as Prime Minister, as well as the “responsible and brave behavior”.

Vucevic resigned in late January after several months of protests, including one during which protesters protesting at the door of one of the SNS party headquarters, were beaten.

The tragedy at Novo Sad station, caused by the fall of a roof, became a symbol of popular disenchantment with the lack of transparency and the alleged corruption of the government.

On Saturday, police indicated that more than 100,000 people participated in a protest demonstration in Belgrade against the events and in memory of the 15 deadly victims. But an independent body pointed to between 275,000 and 325,000 protesters.
