Boat wrecked 22.5 kilometers from Lampedusa
Six people died and another 40 are missing after a boat carrying migrants wreck on Tuesday night to 22.5 kilometers east of Lampedusa Italian island, according to Italian media.
An Italian patrol of the Guardia di Finanza intervened after the alarm was given by the European Frontex agency and upon arrival found the sunk vessel, but still managed to rescue 10 migrants and locate six deadly victims.
However, the survivors indicated at least 40 missing.
The boat had departed from Sfax, Tunisia, on Sunday night and, after the rescue at 22.5 kilometers east of Lampedusa, on the Lampione islet, the survivors were taken to the host center on the small Italian island, closest to the African coast.
Guardia Finanza (National Police) began searching for the missing and today the 10 victims of the wreck – six men and four women – will be heard by the police, who will try to reconstruct, more accurately, what happened.
After the 10 castaways, another 40 migrants (nine women and two minors) arrived on the island from the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Guinea and Malaysia and also reported having left Sfax.
On Tuesday, five landings were registered in Lampedusa, with a total of 213 migrants, with 230 people in the center.
