In recent months, several publications on social networks have emerged to promise 500 euros support allegedly offered by the Institute of Social Security (ISS). However, this information is false and this is another case of attempted burla online.

What is in question?

A Tiktok page, identified as “direct social security,” published an announcement stating that the Portuguese government would have released a social assistance fund for the entire population, with the aim of relieving the financial burden of citizens.

In the same publication, it encouraged users to enroll to receive a support of 500 euros.

However, this page does not belong to the Social Security Institute and the information disclosed is completely false.

Official Confirmation of Social Security

Contacted by the Social Security Institute (ISS) has clarified that it has no profile on Tiktok and that it does not offer money through social networks. According to an official source, the ISS has a presence on the following platforms only:

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • LinkedIn
  • X (old twitter)

Social Security stresses that it never requests personal data through social networks and alerts citizens not to click suspicious links or provide information to unofficial profiles.

According to Google’s transparency report, the address provided by the false page contained harmful content and was used to fool visitors, leading them to share personal data or transfer malicious software.

The legitimate address of the Social Security Institute is seg-social.pt. Any variation of this domain may indicate an attempt at fraud.

Social Security had already warned of other slops

This is not the first case of burla attempts using the social security name. Recently, a fake Instagram profile that also promised money in exchange for registrations. On this occasion, ISS published an official warning, clarifying:

“Social security does not ask for personal data or offer money through social networks.”

The institute recommends that, when they come across this type of messages, users:

  • Do not click suspicious links;
  • Do not share personal data;
  • Report and block the fake accounts.
