US President Donald Trump said Tuesday on his social network Truth that he has an understanding with Russian homologist Vladimir Putin to negotiate a “total ceasefire” in Ukraine quickly.
“We have agreed with an immediate ceasefire in energy facilities and infrastructures, with the understanding that we will work quickly to reach a total ceasefire and finally an end to this truly horrible war between Ukraine and Russia,” Trump wrote after one.
The call took place at 14:00 (Lisbon time) and lasted more than 90 minutes, according to the White House.
Trump considered the conversation “very good and productive” and reiterated his belief that if he were in power, this conflict would not have begun in February 2022 with the russian invasion of the neighboring country, during the administration of the predecessor, Democrat Joe Biden.
Process “is in full swing”
In the conversation with Putin, the US leader added that “many elements of a peace agreement were discussed, including the fact that thousands of soldiers have been killed” in the conflict that has been going on for over three years.
“Both President Putin and the President [da Ucrânia, Volodymyr] Zelensky want this to end. This process is now at all steam, and I hope that for the sake of humanity we reach our goal, “said the Republican politician.
Presidents of the United States and Russia also agreed with a 30-day ceasefire in the conflict in Ukraine, although limited to attacks against energy targets and infrastructure, the White House announced.
Trump and Putin also agreed to start peace negotiations immediately, indicated a statement from the US presidency, which praised the “immense benefit” of a better relationship between Washington and Moscow and the potential for “huge economic agreements.”
Future negotiations should take place in the Middle East.
Ukraine says ‘yes’
Ukraine had already endorsed a 30-day ceasefire agreement, proposed by the United States, installing Putin to do the same.
Following the call, the Russian presidency indicated that he agreed to suspend attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructures for 30 days, describing the conversation as “detailed and frank”.
Vladimir Putin “immediately issued the order corresponding to the Russian military,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
The Russian President is ready to “work with US partners in a complete analysis of the possible ways of reaching an agreement, which must be comprehensive, stable and lasting,” he added.
Moscow also agreed with the exchange of 350 war prisoners-175 on each side-with Ukraine, on Wednesday and, as a gesture of goodwill, Putin informed the US counterpart that Moscow was delivering 23 seriously injured prisoners to Kiev.
Without giving full consent to the 30-day ceasefire plan that Ukraine has already accepted under pressure from Donald Trump, Russia has established conditions for the end of hostilities, including the end of Kiev’s rearmament, and the interruption of Western military aid to Ukrainian forces.
In addition to the suspension of attacks on infrastructure, the White House also pointed out “technical negotiations on the establishment of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, a comprehensive ceasefire and a lasting peace” in Ukraine.
Since returning to power on January 20, Donald Trump has begun a rapprochement to Russia after the freezing of relations between the two countries during Biden’s term due to the invasion of Ukraine.
