Fifteen district districts are on orange alert due to the strong wind, with five of these to be under orange warning due to heavy rain, according to the IPMA.
The districts of Braga, Viana do Castelo and Porto are on alert orange until 09:00 this Thursday, while the warning to Coimbra, Aveiro, Castelo Branco, Viseu, Guarda, Leiria, Lisbon, Santarém, Setúbal and Vila Real. In Beja and Faro the warning is until 03:00, said the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in a statement.
The orange alert due to heavy rain is in force until 03:00 in Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria and Beja.
It is also in force, until 09:00, alert orange due to maritime agitation, in the districts of Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, Leiria, Viana do Castelo and Porto. In Beja, Lisbon, Setúbal and Faro alerts him in force until 03:00.
According to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and atmosphere, by Friday the total accumulated precipitation should be between 70 and 100 millimeters in the Central and South regions, and may be locally superior on the Central Coast.
Snow can fall at the highest points of Serra da Estrela, lowering the quota to 1,200/1,400 meters on Friday.
The Martinho depression will also bring an increase in wind intensity, which will blow south/southeast with gusts that can reach values of 80 to 90 km/h, especially on the coast, and 110 to 120 km/h in the highlands.
It is also foreseen maritime agitation, waiting southwest waves 4 to 5 meters south of Cape Carvoeiro and 3 to 4 meters north of that cable.
“Given the uncertainty in the evolution of the Martinho depression, it is advisable to monitor forecast updates and meteorological warnings,” says the IPMA in a statement.
The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (APENPC) warned on Wednesday at a press conference to worsen the meteorological situation in the continent’s territory in the coming days, with sometimes strong precipitation, wind and maritime agitation.
According to Anepc’s national operational deputy, Alexandre Penha, the predictions of the Portuguese Institute of Sea and atmosphere () to “the next 48 hours” gave a note of “a general state of time, characterized by increased precipitation” and “Wind”, at the end of Wednesday and early morning.
