Current NBA champion Boston Celtics (NBA) agreed with a $ 6.1 billion sale to a group led by the private-firm Symphony Technology Group co-founder, William Chisholm, said the team on Thursday (20).
The sale, which is still awaiting approval by the NBA governors board, would break the most expensive sports team purchase record in North America, exceeding $ 6.05 billion (R $ 34.2 billion) paid by the Washington Commanders of NFL (National Football League) in 2023.
“Bill is an amazing person and a real Celtics fan, born and raised here in the Boston area,” Celtics owner Wyc Gousbeck said in a press release.
“Your love for the team and the city of Boston, along with their chemistry with the rest of the Celtics leadership, make it a natural choice to be the next controlling owner of the team.”
Grousbeck will continue in his position as CEO of Celtics, overseeing the team’s operations until NBA season 2027/28.
In addition to Chisholm and Grousbeck, the owner group also includes Boston Business Executives and Philanthropists, such as Rob Hal and Bruce A. Beal Jr., among others.
“Growing up at North Shore and attending college in New England, I was a fervent Celtics fan throughout my life,” said Chisholm.
“I understand how important Celtics are for the city of Boston – the role the team plays in the community is different from any other city in the country.
“I also understand that there is a responsibility as the leader of the organization to the people of Boston, and I am prepared for this challenge.”
The Celtics, who won their 18th NBA Championship last year, surpassing Los Angeles Lakers as the biggest winner in League history, announced last July their intention to sell the team.
