The European Union (EU) has faced “serious difficulties” to open adhesion negotiations, said Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. During a speech to the European Council, he pointed out that his country “fulfilled his adhesion requirements”, but noted that, at this time, there are still major obstacles to start negotiations from both Ukraine and other aspects of the EU adherence process.
“It is unfortunate to say this, but it is also necessary some kind of pressure within Europe itself to ensure that everything that has been promised really happens. And I am talking about the negotiations of Ukraine adhesion to the EU and the resolution of fundamental questions for European unity,” added the Ukrainian leader. Zelensky called “anti-European” the blockade of important decisions to the continent or previously agreed decisions.
According to him, European efforts to expand safety on the continent have also been “constantly obstructed.” “If we say that Europe must be stronger in global competition, we should also talk about making European decisions faster and more effective, whether in politics, defense, economy, industry or any other area,” he said. He also pointed out that Europe is an essential participant in global diplomacy, and that the continent “must always be at the table in all conversations about the security of Europe.”
Zelensky also reiterated his appeal for countries to maintain pressure on Russia, emphasizing the importance of sanctions. “Moscow easily ignores their promises. In a moment they give the word and, a few hours later, that means absolutely nothing. Putin must stop making unnecessary demands that only extend war and begin to fulfill what promises to the world,” he added.
