A French politician asked the United States to return the statue of Liberty after suggesting that some Americans “chose to move to the tyrant side.”

Raphael Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament that represents the Little Left Party Place published, made commented comments on Sunday (16).

“Give us the statue of freedom,” said Glucksmann. “It was our gift to you. But apparently you despise you.”

The statue was a friendship gift from France to the United States. Inaugurated in 1886, it portrays libertais, the Roman goddess of freedom, holding a torch in her right hand and a license plate in her left hand with the date of the US Declaration of Independence.

Broken chains are under the statue’s clothes to symbolize the end of all kinds of servitude and oppression.

On Monday (17), White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, replied to Glucksmann.

“My advice to that low-level French politician, whose name I do not say, would be reminded that it is just thanks to the United States of America that the French do not speak German right now, so they should be very grateful to our great country,” he said.

Glucksmann then responded in a series of posts on X and Instagram. He emphasized that his gratitude to the American “heroes” who fought the Nazis in World War II is “eternal” before drawing a contrast with the recent as well as Trump’s public chat with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“The heroes of the United States fought the tyrants, did not flattered them. They were enemies of fascism, helped resistance, and did not attack Zelensky,” he wrote.

“It is precisely because I am petrified by the betrayal of Trump that I said yesterday in rally that we could symbolically recover the statue of freedom if his government despised everything it symbolizes in his eyes, to ours, and the eyes of the world,” said Glucksmann.

“Of course no one will come to steal the statue of freedom. The statue is yours. But what it represents belongs to all,” he said.

“And if the free world is no longer in the interest of your government, then we will take control here in Europe.”

Glucksmann is a co -president of the Place Publique party, which currently has three seats in the European Parliament, as well as one in the French parliament and one in the country’s Senate.

Despite the small dimension of his party, Glucksmann has been increasingly receiving attention in the French media, including an interview in the Le Nouvel Political Magazine Posted on March 5, which stressed the importance of European powers increasing their defense spending in the midst of a reorientation of US political priorities.

There are also rumors that Glucksmann plans to run for presidency in the elections scheduled for early 2027.
