Meet the Portuguese village that is between two rivers, where Camões lived and if it eats good fish

In the heart of Portugal, where the rivers meet, a village full of charm and history is hidden. Small in dimensions, but, according to many, giant in beauty and heritage, this village invites the discovery of picturesque streets, stunning landscapes and unique flavors.

Finger -chosen location

The strategic location of this earth has shaped its destiny over the centuries. The Tagus and Zêzere were authentic communication and livelihoods for their inhabitants, making constancy at a mandatory stopping point for traders and travelers. Today, it is these same rivers that continue to attract those looking for a natural and cultural refuge.

A village with history and poetry

The village has not always had the name that today identifies it. In ancient times, it was called “Pinhete”, a toponym that was changed in 1836 by order of D. Maria II. The official reason for the change was to honor the loyalty of the population to the monarchy, but some believe that the change was due to other more practical reasons.

Constância also has a strong connection to Luís de Camões, the greatest poet of the Portuguese language. It is said that he lived in the village during his exile and that the landscape inspired his verses. His presence continues to be remembered at the Camões House of Camões, a space dedicated to the study of his life and work.

What to visit in Constância

Although small, Constância has several points of interest that deserve a careful visit. The Mother Church of Our Lady of the Martyrs, with its Manueline gate, is one of those places. Another highlight is the Alexandre O’Neill library, which houses part of the writer’s estate and allows a dip in Portuguese literature.

For nature lovers, Santa Margarida Environmental Park is the ideal destination. With pedestrian rails, leisure zones and a butterfly, this space provides moments of pure relaxation.

Almourol Castle

A few kilometers from the village, the majestic Almourol Castle rises. Situated on an islet in the middle of the Tagus, this Templar castle transports us to the Middle Ages and offers a unique experience to those who visit it.

A gastronomic experience not to lose

A visit to constancy, as it refers, is not complete without proving local gastronomy. Staying next to two rivers, the river fish dishes are naturally the great specialty of the region. ENSOPER OF ENGY AND SIVILE SUGARDA are considered true delights for taste.

For the most greedy, there is a sweet convent that cannot be missed: the famous slices of Tomar, a treasure of traditional sweets.

Constância is a destination that delights for its simplicity and beauty. Between history, culture and nature, this village has everything to surprise and conquer who visit it.
