After becoming the most voted councilwoman in 2016 and repeat the feat among the federal deputies in Minas Gerais in 2018, both times by, Áurea Carolina decided not to compete for reelection in 2022.

Today, which seeks to promote climate, racial and gender justice initiatives and support new political leaders, she says she see in party structures a barrier to prevent the emergence of female leaders.

“In a way, it is socially authorized that the parties are this place of destroying women. The internal dispute is very violent, and I speak of all spectra. Women have a hard time establishing themselves as leaders,” says the former deputy in an interview with Sheet.

In addition to the disputes in which he came out as a winner, Áurea was a candidate for the city of Belo Horizonte in 2020 and was fourth, with 8.3% of the votes, in defendant by (at the time in the PSD).

In text in 2023, the former deputy said that the decision not to compete anymore gained strength from that election. Amid frustrated articulation attempts to a wide left front, she participated in the election during the puerperium and reports that she had panic seizures later.

The former parliamentarian also cited a disappointment with the betrayals of people whose allies in the House of Representatives, where she suffered a miscarriage during the inauguration ceremony in 2019.

Aurea joined the Government Transition Group (PT) in the area of culture, but today it says see how insufficient the advance of the gender agenda under the president.

Mrs. He was in Congress during the government of and now supports, outside, political initiatives during Lula management. Was there evolution for women in politics during this period?
It’s hard to evaluate if it has improved or got worse, I think it’s more complex. The growth of the female bench, for example, shows that they are parliamentarians of more conservative profile, from center-right parties ,. But just for having more women in themselves, taking up more space, it’s good.

How do you see the growth of this most conservative female bench, both in Congress and in the city councils, in relation to the gender agenda?
In my experience, it is possible to have an approximation and a dialogue between women in divergent positions, without illusion, but that is sincere. It happened when I was a councilwoman.

In Congress, things are decided on the backstage, dinners at the mayor’s house, at nights watered with a lot of drink, where women are rarely. I think even though they are conservative extreme right, there is a possible bond of creating, talking about our perspectives, stories.

In 2023, Mrs. He wrote an article in Piauí magazine detailing his reasons for not competing for reelection. Today, almost two years later, how do you reflect on that decision?
I made a point of giving my testimony so that it wasn’t a personal, lonely burden only. Because much of what I lived is recurrent in the history of so many other women, not just progressive.

The policy of men is done in the neglect of care, because there are those who do the work for them, who will leave the suit ready for him to be prepared in the morning to go to an audience.

When I said I wouldn’t compete, it was in the sense of having the right to take a break, prioritize my well-being, my family. This is also a legitimate decision, and several women came to tell me how encouraging it was to read my statement.

How to improve this challenging scenario for women in party policy?
We have to reflect how much the institutional policy is addicted. Chamber sessions [dos Deputados] Tuesday and Wednesday usually go until dawn in the break without break.

For a breastfeeding mother, as was my case, it is a terror, because it is not an environment to take a baby, but sometimes it is necessary. Establishing an operation hours of a plenary, for example, would be the minimum. Labor legislation things for parliamentarians, because there is no privilege in this.

It is sad to see that Brazil cannot minimally comply with the quota law, nor the allocation of funds for women’s applications. And as it is, in a way, socially authorized that the parties are this place of destroying women.

The internal dispute is very violent, and in all spectra. Women have a hard time settling as leaders, those who are often established to reproduce conventional policy practices, because that is how they can survive in this environment. It becomes a vicious circle where we have nowhere to run.

Mrs. And ours campaigned to nominate a black man for the Supreme Court (STF), which did not happen. How it evaluates the attitudes of the president in relation to gender?Unfortunate, because there is something that may not be intentional, but that is latent, which is exemplifying the torture of women. When they are expelled from these spaces, it communicates a very efficient message [para desencorajar mulheres na política].

I find it very sad that this government has not achieved [avançar na pauta de gênero]. It is a large front, which has dealt with contradictions in a global conjuncture of far right advancement, wars. However, it is very bad that the concessions are always made by this side, which is the historically more fragile side.
