O (Federal Council of Pharmacy) published a resolution authorizing pharmacists to prescribe medications, including those requiring prescription. The standard was approved and published this Thursday (20.mar.2025) (Official Gazette of the Union). Here is (PDF – 140 kb).
Among the attributes of Resolution No. 5 of 02/20/2025, the pharmacist is also authorized to:
- prescribe medications, including those of sale under prescription;
- Renew prescriptions previously issued by other legally qualified health professionals;
- Perform physical examination with the verification of signs and symptoms;
- Request, request, interpretation or verification of exams to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment and patient safety.
Em the CFF argued that, according to the chairman of the board, Wallace Bottacin, “The prescription of sales medicines ‘under prescription’ has always been a competence of the pharmacist. Including, this is defined in the last national curriculum guidelines of 2017. There is planned, by the Ministry of Education, what all pharmacy courses must follow and it is found that the pharmacist must be formed with competence in pharmacological prescriptions.”
According to Bottacin, the only way for a pharmacist to establish the patient’s pharmacotherapeutic profile to build care plans is through pharmaceutical prescription.
“Our resolution ensures that the pharmacist prescribes striking medicines, in addition to those of free sale, which have been prescribed for a long time. From now on, we have a greater solidity, based on Federal Law 13.021/2014 and aligned with the entire historical context of the profession.”says the chairman of the board.
The resolution shall enter into force within 30 days of its publication on April 19, 2025.
