Wind production broke national record thanks to depression: electricity generation from wind reached 112.4 GWh, 56% of the country’s electrical consumption.
Martinho depression came with everything: it caused a total of 5,800 Occurrences Between 00:00 on Wednesday and 11:00 this Thursday, especially fall of trees, but their even rural fires caused in Alto Minho.
But if all the wind took, it also brought good news: a New historical record in wind energy production.
According to REN-National Energy Networks, this Wednesday, the generation of electricity from the wind hit the 112,4 GWhsurpassing the previous record of 110.3 GWh registered on November 24.
This strong production allowed wind energy to supply 56% of electrical consumption national that day. In total, renewable sources were responsible for 92% of the electricity consumed in Portugal.
In addition, the maximum wind power achieved during the storm reached the 5080 MW At 12:15 pm, surpassing the previous record of 5034 MW.
Since the beginning of 2025, renewable energy has dominated the country’s electric supply – 79% of total consumption. Within this segment, water energy leads with 39%, followed by wind with 28%, solar with 7%and biomass with 5%.
Last month, 78% of electrical consumption was also guaranteed by renewable sources. Hydroelectric power benefited from favorable conditions, recording a productability rate of 1.28 (above the historical average of 1). But both wind and solar energy were harmed by more complicated meteorological conditions, with productability rates of 0.71 and 0.83, respectively.
Solar energy, despite weather adversities, continues to grow thanks to the increase in installed capacity. In February, solar power delivered to the network first reached end values in the order of 2800 MW – a 27%homologous growth.
