2024 was “a very bad year for the glaciers,” said Andreas Kellerer-Pirklbauer from the University of Graz on the occasion of the new glacier report of the Austrian Alpine Club. The above -average warm year ensured a particularly strong decline in the alpine ice masses. This also affects the largest glacier in Austria at the foot of the Großglockner, the Pasterze. It is understood and will soon be downgraded to the country’s second largest glacier, as can be seen from a message from the Geosphere Austria before the world day of the glaciers on March 21.
