A Brazilian team made seven substitutions In a 2-1 win over Colombia, this Thursday (03/20). In professional football, since 2022 the number of exchanges has been expanded to five per team. Thus, the situation seen in the game of Brazil is uncommon.
Despite the unusual number of exchanges, the Brazilian team did not do something forbidden. The changes were based on the so -called “Protocol of additional substitutions by concussion”. Sporting News explains.
Seven substitutions in Brazil: the answer
The concussion happens when a player suffers a blow to the head. The medical team of each team has a card to certify the concussion. After evaluation, arbitration entitles you to another exchange beyond five to both teams. The team contrary to that of the player who suffered the problem also receives the right to make the extra change.
In the case of Brazil x Colombia, the two teams gained entitled to seven changes because Alisson (from Brazil) and Davinson Sánchez (from Colombia) crashed headlong. Thus, there were two concussion protocols.
Brazil used the seven exchanges. Colombia finished the game with only four changes.

In Brazilian football, a case of sixth replacement for concussion happened in the Brasileirão last year, in classic between Fluminense and Botafogo. Nonato suffered a concussion and Felipe Melo entered Flu, with the sixth exchange of Tricolor. A minute later, Botafogo made the sixth change by strategy, taking Alex Telles and putting Marçal.
The concussion protocol came into force in world football on July 1, 2024.

Concussion Substitutions: Rules
Principles
-
Each team can use a maximum of a “substitute for concussion” per game.
-
Concussion replacement can be made regardless of the number of substitutions already used.
-
If the number of athletes registered as substitutes is equal to the maximum number of “normal” substitutes allowed, a previously replaced player can be used as a “substitute for concussion”.
-
When a team uses a “substitute for concussion”, the opposing team can make an “additional” replacement for any reason.
Procedure
-
“Concussion replacement” may occur:
-
Immediately after concussion or suspicion;
-
After field evaluation or outside the field;
-
At any time, even if the player has already returned to the field.
-
-
The decision to replace the referee or fourth referee, preferably with a different color card or form.
-
A player with concussion or suspicion cannot continue playing, including penalty shootout, and should be sent to the locker room or medical care.
-
The opposing team will be informed and may use a “additional” substitute at any later time.
Replacement opportunities
-
“Concussion Replacement” is independent of the “normal” replacement opportunities.
-
If a team makes a “normal” replacement simultaneously with a “concussion replacement”, it counts as one of its normal opportunities.
-
It is not allowed to use “concussion replacement” to make a “normal” replacement if all normal opportunities have already been used.
-
When a team makes a “replacement for concussion”, the opposing team receives an “additional” replacement opportunity, exclusive to the “additional” substitute.
