“The increase in the number of deaths in so many regions of the world shows why we need an international and holistic response that can avoid more tragic lives of lives.”said the deputy director of OIM Operations, UGOCHI DANIELS, in a statement.
In 2024, at least 8,938 people died on migratory routes, the most lethal Asian, followed by the Mediterranean crossing and Africa, which includes Sahara.
The IME data has been at least 2014. Each year since 2021, the annual total immigrant deaths have increased, with many other thousands believed not to be accounted for annually due to the lack of official records, says Oim.
The Geneva-based agency is one of several groups that help displaced people hit by large United States aid cuts, forcing it to reduce or end programs that, according to it, will have a severe impact on immigrants.
