In the UN, Brazil defends direct negotiation between Russia and Ukraine

Brazil said that direct negotiation between Russia and Ukraine is essential for the end of the war. In a joint statement with other emerging countries, Brazilian diplomacy argued that the UN (United Nations) should be the center of diplomatic efforts for a fair and lasting solution to the conflict, which has lasted more than 3 years.

For the Brazilian ambassador to the UN, Sérgio Danese, the goal is “To achieve a peace agreement directly and accepted by both parties, which takes into account the legitimate concerns on each side.”. In September, Brazil and China led the formation of a group of countries of the so -called global south to articulate strategies that could end the war in Eastern Europe.

In the beginning, the group stressed the importance of including Russia in conversations – a position that was rejected by Europe. As the White House approached with Russia under the administration of President Donald Trump (Republican Party), the requirement began to include Ukraine’s active participation in the negotiating tables.

Danese emphasized that the UN can play a central role in this process, promoting diplomatic efforts and ensuring the implementation of a possible peace agreement.

“Recent developments suggest that the conflict may be approaching a turning point, with the focus changing from the battlefield to the negotiating table […] We welcome this possible change and see it as an opportunity to generate a new momentum to end the conflict. This could mark a critical step towards peace and make way for significant and sustainable progress ”said Danese.

The ambassador also argued that the demands of the global south should be considered. According to him, “Questions such as food and energy security, as well as humanitarian assistance, must be an integral part of the peace process, ensuring that the voices of the global southern are heard and effectively incorporated into discussions.”.
