The president of the United States, Donald Trump, said Thursday that “very soon” he will sign the agreement of, especially ‘rare earth’, with Ukraine after the ongoing negotiations with kyiv, which take place after.
“We are signing agreements in several places to release rare earth, minerals and many other things worldwide, but in particular in Ukraine. We are doing very well with Ukraine and Russia. And one of the things we are doing is signing, very soon, an agreement on rare earths with Ukraine, a country that has enormous value in rare lands, and we appreciate it,” he said.
During a ceremony at the White House, Trump recalled that on the eve he spoke with both Zelenski and Russian President Vladimir Putin. “We would love to see that this ended. I think we are doing it quite well in that sense. Hopefully, we could prevent thousands of people from dying every week. That’s what they are about. They die unnecessarily. I think we will achieve it,” he said in reference to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Before his statements, the US president has invoked emergency powers to boost the national production of critical minerals widely used in the economic sector, amid commercial conflict with mineral producers such as China or Canada.
“The US was once the largest world producer of lucrative minerals, but excessive federal regulation has eroded the mineral production of our nation. Our national and economic security is seriously threatened by our dependence on the mineral production of hostile foreign powers. It is imperative for our national security to take immediate measures to facilitate national mineral production to the maximum to the maximum,” says the published executive order.
The document orders federal agencies to create a list of American mines that can be approved rapidly, as well as what federal lands, including those controlled by the Pentagon, could be used for mineral processing.
