USA saw military coup in Brazil as an "preferable" option to the communists, according to CIA documents

The document underlines that the American authorities “seemed to feel that a military coup at some point could be preferable to allow such a large and powerful country to fall into the hands of the opposition.”

One of the secret documents released by the US government reveals that then -President John F. Kennedy counselors thought a military coup in Brazil would be “preferable” to let the opposition seize power.

The archives were made public after an order signed by Donald Trump shortly after taking office in January. Documents related to Brazil, released on Tuesday, are part of a lead-related lead to Kennedy’s murder.

Many of the thousands of disclosed documents address CIA activities, the US Information Agency, during the Cold War period, citing, for example, Brazil and the concerns of the influence of communists in Latin America.

One of the archives, dated April 17, 1963, reports a panel meeting of the president’s foreign intelligence advisory board. This document was initially released on November 20, 2017, but with several censored parts –

The meeting took place on April 15 and gathered J. Patrick Coyne, panel executive secretary, Robert Murphy and Gordon Gray, counselors about international US government. Who writes about this is Cord Meyer Jr., head of the secret action team.

At the beginning of the meeting, Meyer described the “electoral operations” of the United States in Chile, Dominican Republic, Brazil and Guatemala.

“Mr. Murphy was particularly, and both he and Mr. Gray found it difficult to understand why the state department [dos EUA] continued to provide large -scale economic assistance when [João] Goulart until then refused to clean the House (SIC) of communists and companions of travel, both within the government and the labor movement, ”says the document.

According to Meyer, the counselors were interested in knowing that the agents were in contact with military leaders who opposed Goulart.

Then the document stresses that the American authorities “seemed to feel that a military coup at some point could be preferable to allow such a large and powerful country to fall into the hands of the opposition.”

So the counselors questioned how much he was invested in these “electoral operations” and what were the outcome prospects.

Also during the meeting, situations were discussed from various other countries and regions, from Chile, Argentina and Haiti to India, China and Angola.
