Kabul/Geneva – The new school year has started in Afghanistan. But for older girls, the classes remain closed for the fourth year in a row. Education for girls from the seventh school level is prohibited among the ruling Islamist Taliban. According to the UN Children’s Aid Work Unicef, 2.2 million girls are affected by the school ban nationwide. The consequences are catastrophic for Afghan girls and the whole country, according to Unicef Executive Director Catherine Russell on Saturday.
