Measure was a response to the shots of three rockets against the Jewish state and Tel Aviv’s first attack in the neighboring country to the north since he broke the ceasefire with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, last Monday (17)
Israel’s army bombarded Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon on Saturday after the order of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to attack “dozens of terrorist targets” in the neighboring country.
The measure was a response to the shots of three rockets against the Jewish state and Tel Aviv’s first attack in the country neighboring the north since he broke the ceasefire with Hamas in the Gaza Strip, last Monday (17). Israel and Hezbollah also live today a fragile truce.
The Shiite Lebanese group denied responsibility for the launch of this Saturday’s rockets, stating that “it had no connection” the offensive and was still committed to the ceasefire. No other group claimed the authorship of the attack.
The bombings killed a woman and a girl in the town of Tulin and left eight injured, according to Lebanese news agency O Pública NNA, and occur after the Israeli army intercepted Lebanon’s launched rockets.
In a statement, Netanyahu stated that he and defense minister Israel Katz instructed the Israeli military to act firmly “against dozens of terrorist targets in Lebanon.”
Israeli-Chief of Staff, General Eyal Zamir, had warned that the Army would respond to “severely to this morning’s attacks.” Katz said he could not “allow Lebanon rockets to be fired towards the communities of Galilee”, northern Israel.
The Strength of the United Nations in Lebanon (UniFil), present in the south of the country, expressed concern about the “possible escalation” of violence.
The UN strength encouraged “all parties to avoid compromising progress made, especially when civil lives are at stake and fragile stability,” he said in a statement. “Any new climb could have serious consequences for the region.”
Attacks weaken the sealed truce agreement on November 27 between Israel and Hezbollah, which ended two months of open war.
The conflict broke out after months of gunfire in the border zone, where Hezbollah opened a front in solidarity with Hamas at the beginning of the war in Gaza in October 2023. Since then, Tel Aviv has also bombarded in other areas of Lebanon, including Beirut, and decimated the summit of the Irã -related group from Iran since the decade. 1990, Hassan Nasrallah.
The truce has been able to stay since November in general, despite mutual accusations of repeated and less scale violations.
In Gaza, after nearly two months of relative calm, the inhabitants flew again from the region to survive after Israel effectively abandoned the ceasefire this week, when he launched a new campaign of air and land bombing against Hamas.
The first day of air strikes resumed on Tuesday (18) killed more than 400 Palestinians, one of the deadliest days of the 17-month war, with little truce since then. The Gaza Civil Defense, controlled by Hamas, announced a total of 520 deaths since Israel resumed bombing -more than 190 would be children.
On Friday (21), Katz threatened to attach parts of the Gaza Strip if Hamas does not release the hostages. He ordered the Army to take control of areas of the region, stating that the group’s refusal would result in loss of territory. Katz also mentioned the possibility of “permanent occupation” and highlighted the increase in air, terrestrial and sea attacks to press Hamas and move civilians to the south.
