According to a survey made by the Fogo Cruzado Institute, there were 41 records from January 1 to March 16

In the first 75 days of this year, – from January 1st to March 16 – 41 people were victims of stray bullet in the state of Rio de Janeiro. This number represents a 58% growth compared to the 26 cases registered in the same period as 2024.

The comparison is part of a survey released this week by a non -profit institution that compiles shooting data and firearm wounded in different Brazilian capitals.

According to the cross -fire methodology, it is considered a victim of lost bullet to “A person who had no connection, participation or influence on the event in which firearm was fired, but being hit by a projectile”.

The study also points out that the 41 victims of stray bullet represent 11.5% of the total 355 people shot in the state in 2025. Firearies shots left 167 victims and 188 injured.

Among the firearm shots include 3 children, 3 teenagers and 7 elderly.

The crossfire also reports that 9 victims of stray bullet died and 39 were injured. These numbers also surpass last year, when, in the same period, 3 shots died and 23 were injured.

Police operations

Cruard fire reaps and publicizes through mobile app information on real -time shooting exchanges – verified by analysts. The institute identified that 66% of stray bullet victims in the first 75 days of 2025 were reached during police operations.

In all, 27 cases were counted, of which 7 ended with death.

In the same period last year, there were 10 cases in police operations (38%), one death and 9 injured.

Home and school

Cross -fire analysts detail that nine people were hit by lost bullets indoors in the state of Rio de Janeiro in 2025, which corresponds to 22% of the total. One of them died.

There was also the case of a woman hit in a school. Alcione da Silva, 49, was shot inside the Campus of the Support Foundation for Technical School (Faetec), in Quintino, neighborhood of North Zone Carioca.

She had just left her son at school and was scraped. “At the moment Alcione was hit, there was a police action in Morro do Saçu, in Campinho [bairro vizinho]”stresses the cross fire.

The city of Rio concentrates 34 of the 41 cases of stray bullet in 2025. The others are distributed to other municipalities of the metropolitan region: São Gonçalo (4), São João de Meriti (2) and Maricá (1).

Confrontation protocol

In the evaluation of the regional coordinator of the Fogo Cruzado Institute in Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Nhanga, the reduction of cases of shots passes through the state review protocols to confront crime.

“The Rio de Janeiro police aim at the confrontation instead of seeking planning and intelligence. For years, the population has been hostage to fear and police operations that do not reduce crime and do not bring security,” he tells Agência Brasil. “The result is always the same: high rate of lethality. Every three victims of lost bullets mapped in 2025 by cross fire, two were hit in police actions.”says.

Sought by Brazil agencythe State Department of Public Security said it does not comment on the data present in the report, “Since you are not aware of the methodology used for your collection”.
