Rui Costa has been governor of Bahia and today is Lula’s minister at the Civil House

The Minister of the Civil House, revealed that he has already discussed with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva the possibility of running the Senate in 2026. During an interview with radios, Costa said he is available to the Workers Party (PT) to be a candidate for the state. However, he stressed that there is still much to be discussed about this possibility, since the elections are over a year away.

In 2026, two vacancies for the Senate will be in dispute in Bahia, unlike 2022, when only one was played. The first vacancy should be played by Jaques Wagner, the current Senate government leader, who will seek reelection with the support of Bahia Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues (PT).

The second vacancy is the one that Rui Costa wants, but he will face competition from PSD Senator Ângelo Coronel, who should also dispute the support of the petista electorate and the party himself. Bahia, being a state where the PT has significant political strength, promises to be the scene of a fierce electoral dispute.
