What is glycerin? Glycerin, also called glycerol, is a colorless, odorless substance with a slightly sweet taste. It is created as a by -product during soap or biofuel production. It is characterized by strong hygroscopic properties, i.e. the ability to bind water molecules.
Glycerin is widely known for its own moisturizing and softening properties. Although it is mainly associated with cosmetics, its potential goes far beyond the bathroom shelf with creams and lotions. It turns out that it can completely change the way we cultivate our textiles. It is thanks to glycerin that towels can gain the desired white and unmatched softness.
Why do towels become rough? It results primarily from detergent, hard water and mineral sediments. With each subsequent laundry, these undesirable substances accumulate, causing that the fabric loses its natural softness, becomes stiff and even unpleasant to the touch. Traditional softeners, although they temporarily improve the situation, with time further deteriorate the condition of towels, creating a coating on them that reduces the absorbency of the material.
Glycerin works on textiles in a completely different way than classic rinsing fluids. Its action is based on the natural ability to absorb and stop moisture inside the fabric fibers. As a result, glycerin makes, and also remain fresh and pleasant to the touch longer. What’s more, glycerin also helps to maintain white, minimizing the risk of yellowing and grafting of fabrics, which often occurs as a result of deposition of detergents and minerals.
Just a small amount of glycerin to notice a significant improvement in the quality of towels. Here is a simple recipe, how to use it during:
- Add about 1-2 tablespoons of pure glycerin to the rinsing fluid container.
- Make the towels in a standard laundry cycle, preferably at 40-60 degrees Celsius.
- After washing, let the towels dry naturally, avoiding drying them in a drum dryer at high temperatures, which can negatively affect the softness of the material.
Unlike many commercial softeners Glycerin is biodegradable, harmless to the environment and does not cause allergies and skin irritation. It is also economical – one bottle of glycerin lasts for many laundry cycles, and the cost of its purchase is often lower than specialized chemicals.
Thanks to the simple treatment, which is the addition of glycerin to washing towels after the first time you will notice that the towels are definitely softer, absorbent and pleasant to the touch.
